New Project to Enhance Foreign Language Education in Türkiye starts

A new, ambitious project aimed at reinforcing foreign language education in Türkiye has officially commenced. The 5-year joint EU/CoE project seeks to align Turkish foreign language education with internationally recognised standards, specifically the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and the CEFR Companion Volume (2020) developed by the Council of Europe (CoE).

The project's primary goal is to enhance the quality and effectiveness of foreign language education in Türkiye. It aims to improve policy design and implementation, in-service teacher training, and the overall competence of foreign language teachers and learners. The Ministry of National Education (MoNE), particularly the Board of Education (BoE) and its Educational Research Department, will play a crucial role in this initiative.

In the next five years, the project will provide expertise to prepare evidence-based policy recommendations, develop a sample of paper-based language proficiency tests, and create a digital repository of language teaching resources based on action-oriented approach.

Additionally, the BoE staff will gain further competences to guide foreign language teaching and support foreign language teachers, while foreign language teachers and learners will benefit from the resources to be offered with and increased awareness about the importance of foreign language education in promoting inclusive societies.

This comprehensive project marks a significant effort to reinforce the quality and effectiveness of foreign language education, contributing to inclusive educational practices in Türkiye.
