The Council of Europe convenes the 6th plenary session of the Steering Committee for Education (CDEDU) in Strasbourg

The Education Department of the Council of Europe is pleased to announce that the 6th Plenary Session of the Steering Committee for Education (CDEDU) took place on October 10th and 11th in the Palais de l'Europe in Strasbourg. This two-day event brought together representatives, observers and participants from Member States to engage in discussions that will shape the future of education policy across Europe.

The plenary session served as a platform to review the progress made in the implementation of the Council of Europe's Education Strategy 2024-2030.

During the session, delegates and experts focussed on several priority areas that are crucial for advancing the Council of Europe's education agenda. Key topics include:

European Space for Citizenship Education: This initiative aims to develop a common understanding of quality citizenship education across Europe, ensuring that democratic values and principles are embedded in educational frameworks. The preparatory phase of the project will be officially launched in Berlin next week, paving the way for further development in close cooperation with civil society and professional networks.

Automatic recognition of higher education qualifications: Discussions highlighted the progress made so far by the Automatic Recognition Working Group in developing a new instrument for the mutual recognition of academic qualifications within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

Combating fraud in education and promoting transparency: This session examined the launch of recent studies on open school data and student awareness of education fraud. Participants discussed the possible establishment of a centre for preventing and fighting education fraud, which would play a crucial role in improving transparency and integrity in education systems across the region.

Digital citizenship and AI in education: The session addressed the preparation of the European Year of Digital Citizenship Education 2025, the latest developments regarding the work of the Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence in Education and discussed the development of a regulatory framework to protect human rights and promote educational equity in the context of AI technologies.

These discussions culminated in strategic decisions that will guide the implementation of the Council of Europe's Education Strategy 2024-2030.
