The EUR-OPA Major Hazards Agreement invites secondary school students in all Council of Europe member states to participate in the 2025 BeSafeNet Olympiad that will be held on Wednesday 12 March 2025 at 09:00 (CET). Participants will have the opportunity to test their knowledge of natural and technological hazards.
Natural and technological hazards become disasters causing great human and economic losses due to societal vulnerability, that is, the propensity of people, societies and ecosystems to be harmed. Many natural hazards are not just natural processes, but have been made more likely and more intense by human activity. The BeSafeNet project implemented by Cyprus Civil defence and supported by the European and Mediterranean Major Hazards Agreement (EUR-OPA), aims to reduce losses caused by disasters by providing young people with the knowledge they need to minimise risk of hazards turning into disasters and to prepare for and respond to emergencies.
As a tool, BeSafeNet provides basic knowledge for the benefit of pupils and teachers, by promoting safety and preparedness through awareness raising among youth. The Olympiad will feature fifty multiple-choice questions will be based on the following five topics:
- Landscape fires
- Tsunamis
- Volcanic eruptions
- Chemical emergencies
- Climate crisis
Details on how to register and participate are published on the BeSafeNet website.
