EUR-OPA participates in the European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction (EFDRR)

The European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction (EFDRR) held its 7th annual meeting in Helsinki from 3 to 5 October 2016 to discuss how to support and facilitate implementation of the Sendai Framework for DRR in Europe. The Sendai Framework aims to building the resilience of societies to disasters by committing states to a road map of concise, focused, forward-looking actions that need to be completed by 2030. Turkey officially succeeded Finland at the close of the three-day Meeting.

31 European states were represented by their national platforms for DRR and discussed, among other issues, how to improve coherence of DRR with Climate Change Change policies and how to improve awareness of risks among people and decision makers. Council of Europe presented innovative work on inclusion of people with handicaps and migrants and DRR.

In a closing declaration, European Forum participants called for “stronger engagement by European leaders and decision makers in the process of moving forward the disaster risk reduction agenda and Sendai Framework implementation, given the powerful role of disaster risk reduction in fostering economic growth and supporting sustainable development.”
