1977 - Avignon

The Avignon townAvignon is a municipality in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, in the south of France. Known as the “City of the Popes”, as the popes resided there from 1309 to 1423, it is one of the few French towns to have preserved its ramparts and its historic centre, consisting of the papal palace, the diocesan buildings, the "Rocher des Doms" and the bridge of Avignon. Made famous by the popular song “Sur le Pont d’Avignon” and its festival, this a real artistic and cultural shop front which it also has a UNESCO World Heritage classification.

From 1960 onwards, Avignon cemented ties with eight towns throughout the world: Colchester (United Kingdom), Diourbel (Senegal), Guanajuato (Mexico), New Haven (United States), Siena (Italy),Tarragona and Tortosa (Spain) and Wetzlar (Germany), with which it keeps up exchanges at various levels: school, culture, sports, professions, economy and health.
