1987 - Berlin-Neukölln
Of the 12 districts which now make up Berlin, Neukölln is the most densely populated and the most working class. It is a mix of neighbourhoods in which varied lifestyles and cultures co-exist. It could be equated with Berlin as a whole, given the extent to which it shares the same goals for urban change, in Europe’s largest construction site.
The Europe Prize was awarded to Berlin-Neukölln for its outstanding commitment to European integration, before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Over the years, Berlin-Neukölln has developed an extensive network of European co-operation and friendship at municipal level through various twinnings, in particular with Anderlecht (Belgium), Boulogne-Billancourt (France), Hammersmith (United Kingdom), Mario (Italy) and Zaanstad (Netherlands).
