1995 - Bologna
It has sought for many years to promote the ideal of a modern and democratic Europe both through its twinnings and its involvement in a large number of organisations and through its international role as a university city.
The activities developed with its twin towns – Coventry (United Kingdom), Kharkiv (Ukraine), La Plata (Argentina), Leipzig (Germany), St Louis (USA and Senegal), Thessaloniki (Greece), San Carlos (Nicaragua), Toulouse and Valence (France) and Zagreb (Croatia) – cover many sectors of activity. Bologna has also signed co-operation agreements with Ljubljana (Slovenia), Nizhny Novgorod (Russian Federation) and Chongqing (China).
Having a great tradition of solidarity, it has also signed a twinning agreement with Tuzla (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and supported projects for groups from the former Yugoslavia.
