1982 - Braine-l'Alleud

The Braine-l'Alleud townBraine l’Alleud is a French-speaking Belgian municipality situated in the Wallonia region in the province of Walloon Brabant. On the low plains of the Brabant countryside, history wrote the end of one of its great epics: that of Napoleon and Waterloo. Yet the town has never had a feisty face but presents a peaceful, smiling profile.

The Prize was awarded to Braine l’Alleud for a deep European commitment through its twinning arrangements with Basingstoke and Deane (United Kingdom), Drumondville (Canada), Menden (Germany), Ouistreham Riva-Bella (France) and Šlapanice (Czech Republic), and especially for the creation of many institutions designed to foster European encounters and co-operation in the cultural sphere.
