2000 - Cockermouth

The Cockermouth townThe town of Cockermouth is located in Cumbria in England, not far south of the Scottish border.  It is an attractive market town on the confluence of the region’s two main rivers.

The Europe Prize was awarded jointly to Cockermouth and the French town of Marvejols.  Despite the distance separating them (1,600 km) and their small size, the two towns have developed an exemplary twinning since 1983, which has progressed remarkably over the years.  More than 7,000 people from the two towns from all age groups and social strata have been involved in the twinning since its inception, and its success owes much to the enthusiasm of the towns’ municipal councils and twinning committees.
