1992 - Delfzijl

The Delfzijl townDelfzijl is a city in the Netherlands, situated in the province of Groningen, in the southern Ems estuary.

Delfzijl is a member of an alliance of European towns, along with Aubenas (France), Schwarzenbek (Germany), Sierre (Switzerland), Zelzate (Belgium), which have all previously won the Europe Prize, and Cesenatico (Italy).  Its intensive, regular exchanges with its twin towns are dominated by major gatherings held every second year in one or other of them and by youth exchanges which have been conducted since 1961. In addition to the above alliance, Delfzijl has boosted its network of exchanges through twinnings with the German towns of Bierum and Krummhörn, the Japanese city of Shinnanyo and the Polish town of Kolobrzeg.
