2005 - Kaliningrad

The Kaliningrad townKaliningrad is a town in the Russian Federation, which lies in the territorial enclave of Kaliningrad oblast, by the Baltic sea, between Poland and Lithuania.  Having long been a symbol of a destroyed town and typical Soviet architecture, Kaliningrad began to renovate its town centre from the end of the 2000s, with major reconstruction work on old buildings.

Since 1991, the town has been developing international relations through numerous twinnings and co-operation agreements, especially with towns in Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden and the United Kingdom.  The award of the Europe Prize to Kaliningrad coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Europe Prize and the 750th anniversary of the town.
