1969 - Karlsruhe

The Karlsruhe townKarlsruhe is a German town in the Land of Baden-Württemberg in south-west Germany, some twenty kilometres from France. Through the ages the town has remained one of the country’s most active laboratories of liberalism and democracy. Its spirit of order and balance is expressed today in the division of its activities between commerce and culture. The airy streets and squares of Baden’s metropolis, its fountains and green areas, reflect the town’s spirit of openness and hospitality. A large number of cultural organisations and institutions have long been set up in Karlsruhe and work for the improvement of international relations. Karlsruhe is twinned with Halle (Germany), Krasnodar (Russian Federation), Nancy (France), Nottingham (United Kingdom) and Timisoara (Romania). In 1969 Karlsruhe and Nancy, its twin town, were rewarded with the Europe Prize for their contribution to Franco-German reconciliation.
