2003 - Klaipėda

The Klaipėda townAs Lithuania’s main port on the Baltic, Klaipėda is the country’s third-largest town after Vilnius and Kaunas, and has developed the largest number of twinnings.  It has a total of 16 very active twinnings, most of them in Europe and in particular with port cities such as Gdynia (Poland), Kaliningrad (Russian Federation), Karlskrona (Sweden), Kotka (Finland) and Liepaja (Latvia) – but also in the United States (Cleveland) and Japan (Kuji).

Through numerous joint projects and large popular events such as the “Sea Festival” and the Nordic-Baltic Choir Competition, Klaipeda shows that people from all levels of society can meet and experience European understanding.  Between east and west, Klaipėda is the Baltic ambassador of a plural Europe – an age-old Babel with a good harbour and magnificent beaches.
