2000 - Marvejols

The Marvejols townMarvejols is a French town in the Massif Central, in Languedoc-Roussillon region.  A former royal city, it has both medieval and Renaissance architecture.  Visitors are attracted by its narrow streets, fortified gates, church, old houses and various curiosities.

The Europe Prize was awarded jointly to Marvejols and the English town of Cockermouth.  Despite the distance separating them (1,600 km) and their small size, the two towns have developed an exemplary twinning since 1983, which has progressed remarkably over the years.  More than 7,000 people from the two towns from all age groups and social strata have been involved in the twinning since its inception, and its success owes much to the enthusiasm of the towns’ municipal councils and twinning committees.
