Santiago de Compostela stands in the province of A Coruña in the autonomous community of Galicia. This traditional centre of pilgrimage, which attracts thousands of Europeans every year, has made pilgrimages the central element of the friendship between its population and Europe’s peoples, forming a true symbol for European unity. Through the establishment of a youth association, “The Friends of Europe”, it has made considerable efforts to promote European understanding.
The city is twinned with Braga (Portugal), Barcelona, Cáceres and Zaragoza (Spain) and Querétaro (Mexico).
