2001 - St Pölten
St Pölten is the capital of Lower Austria.
The old town’s Baroque and Art Nouveau areas co-exist with contemporary neighbourhoods designed by leading international architects. Through its outstanding twinnings with Brno (Czech Republic), Clichy (France) and Heidenheim (Germany) and also its many European awareness-raising activities for the public, St. Pölten has shown a longstanding commitment to promoting the European ideal. The decision in 1995 to set up a co-operative network of European medium-sized towns added a new dimension to St. Pölten’s European activities.
