1972 - Zelzate

The Zelzate townZelzate, a small Flemish-speaking municipality in the Flemish region of northern Belgium near Ghent and very close to the Dutch border, straddles the ship canal from Ghent to Terneuzen and unites all the requisite features for modern-day European living, development and communication. Its swing bridge, one of the most spectacular in Europe, is a symbol of progress for a town which is moving ahead. Zelzate belongs to the “European Cities” league on the same footing as Aubenas (France), Cesenatico (Italy), Delfzijl (Netherlands), Schwarzenbek (Germany) and Sierre (Switzerland).
