Iceland ratifies the revised European Social Charter

Today in a Treaty event held in the framework of the High-Level Conference on the European Social Charter in Vilnius, Mr. Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson, Minister of Social Affairs and Labour Market and Minister for Nordic Cooperation of Iceland deposited with the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe Bjørn Berge, an instrument of ratification of the European Social Charter (Revised) (ETS 163).

Iceland becomes the 36th state of the Council of Europe to join this treaty that guarantees fundamental social and economic rights as a counterpart to the European Convention on Human Rights, which protects civil and political rights. The High-Level Conference on the European Social Charter marked a turning point for Iceland in re-affirming its commitment to social rights.

The revised European Social Charter will enter into force in respect of Iceland on 1 September 2024.
