The Council of Europe promotes the protection of children's rights in Armenia through the European Social Charter

On 25 March 2025, the Council of Europe Office in Yerevan organised a workshop highlighting the crucial role of the European Social Charter in protecting children’s rights in Armenia with a specific focus on refugee and migrant children.

The event brought together national and international stakeholders to explore the role of the European Social Charter in safeguarding children’s rights, review Armenia’s national legal framework for child protection, and address challenges and opportunities for progress. Special attention was given to the rights of refugee and migrant children and the challenges in ensuring their protection.

The event featured opening remarks by representatives of the Council of Europe, followed by a keynote address by Aoife Nolan, President of the European Committee of Social Rights and Professor of International Human Rights Law at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. Prof. Nolan emphasized the European Social Charter significance as a fundamental instrument for ensuring social justice and child welfare in society.

Participants engaged in interactive discussions on national legal frameworks, international commitments, and the role of the human rights community in strengthening child protection policies in Armenia.

The workshop served as a key initiative in fostering dialogue and cooperation between Armenian institutions and international partners in advancing children’s rights through the European Social Charter.

The workshop was organised by the Council of Europe as part of its projects  “Enhancing social human rights in Armenia” and “Protecting the Rights of Armenian Children in Post-Conflict Context” implemented within the Council of Europe Action Plan for Armenia 2023-2026, reaffirming the commitment to enhancing social human rights and ensuring the protection of vulnerable children in the country.
