Today, experts, policymakers, and representatives from States Parties are holding a first meeting in Strasbourg to assess, strengthen and align the European Code of Social Security with contemporary social security needs. The Code, a cornerstone of social protection in Council of Europe member states, sets minimum standards for healthcare, unemployment benefits, pensions, and family allowances.
With evolving labor markets and socio-economic challenges, the meeting explores ways to modernise the Code and improve its monitoring system. Discussions will focus on enhancing reporting mechanisms, aligning with other European social security instruments, and sharing best practices among member states.
Participants will also examine how the Code interacts with the European Social Charter and ILO conventions, ensuring it remains relevant and adaptable. The outcomes will shape a roadmap for improving implementation and will be presented at the Governmental Committee meeting in May 2025.
