The Council of Europe Project “Strengthening Protection of Social and Economic Rights in Georgia” organised a workshop on non-accepted provisions of the European Social Charter vis-à-vis national regulations of Georgia, on March 15-16. The objective of the workshop was to promote the ratification of new provisions of the European Social Charter by Georgia and to discuss the possibility of accepting additional provisions in order to strengthen the protection of social rights.
The event brought together representatives from five ministries, the parliament, the Public Defender's office, the Labor Inspection office, trade unions, employers' association, civil society and respective international organisations.
The workshop was opened by Stefan Sirbu, Deputy Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia, Tamar Gvaramadze, first Deputy Public Defender of Georgia and Irma Gelashvili, Chief Specialist of the Policy Department from the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour Health and Social Affairs.
Participants were able to interact with current and former members of the European Committee of Social Rights (ECSR): Matti Mikkola, former President of the ECSR, Monika Schlachter, former Vice-president of the ECSR and Tatiana Puiu, current member of the ECSR. This exchange contributed to a better understanding of the universality and indivisibility of the fundamental rights guaranteed by the European Social Charter and how the European Committee of Social Rights monitors the respect of these rights.
The event was organised within the framework of the Council of Europe Project “Strengthening Protection of Social and Economic Rights in Georgia.” The Project is part of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2020-2023
