Patrick Penninckx, Head of the Information Society Department of the Council of Europe made a key-note speech at the South East Europe Media Conference “The New Frontline: Working Together to Foster Media Freedom” organised by OSCE on 17 September 2020. Reviewing media freedom trends on a global, European and regional scale, he introduced the latest Council of Europe standards and tools to protect journalists, promote media pluralism, support quality journalism and address information disorder, fake news and hate speech, topics of particular relevance throughout Western Balkans. The presentation concluded with the review of the JUFREX programme for Freedom of Expression and Freedom of the Media in South-East Europe and the list of potential areas of cooperation between OSCE and the Council of Europe.
