Back Launch of the initiative "Journalists Matter" for the protection and safety of journalists in Cyprus

Cypriot Press and Information Office launched the "Journalists Matter" initiative ahead of the Council of Europe's campaign for the safety of journalists, to be launched in the fall of 2023.

Patrick Penninckx, head of the Information Society Department of the Council of Europe, participated in the discussion entitled Protecting journalists, protecting democracy, with Matthew Caruana Galizia, journalist, director of "The Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation" and son of murdered journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, and Herman Grech, editor-in-chief of "Times of Malta" and director of the play "They Blew Her Up', which tells the story of the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, journalist and anti-corruption activist, through testimonies. Aliki Stylianou, the Director of the Press and Information Office, moderated the discussion.

For the launch of the Cypriot initiative that will become part of the campaign, Patrick Penninckx officially handed over the "Protect journalists, save democracy" stamp. He also remarked on the resolution on the safety of journalists adopted during the Conference of Ministers responsible for Media and Information Society Artificial Intelligence – Intelligent Politics Challenges and opportunities for media and democracy in Nicosia on 10-11 June 2021.

The Council of Europe Campaign for the Safety of Journalists is an initiative aiming to promote press freedom and protect journalists from violence, threats, and harassment while performing their duties. As part of this Campaign, the Council of Europe is inviting everyone to support their cause, take action for their enhanced protection, while raising awareness about the importance of safeguarding journalists and their right to report the news freely and without fear. The Campaign is a 5-year project meant to cover all Council of Europe member States. It is now open for voluntary contributions.

Identifying Risks

A number of studies and reports have been commissioned by the Council of Europe to shed light on particular aspects of journalists’ safety. 

Building capacity in member states

Over the past decade, the Council of Europe Cooperation Programme has been implemented in over 20 projects in member States and partner countries promoting media freedom, including various aspects of journalist’s safety. Targeted activities include seminars and training sessions for law enforcement and judicial authorities on protection of journalists, methodological recommendations for police on dealing with situations involving journalistic activities and legal support for journalists, victims of abuse.
