On 11 and 12 May 2016 the Council of Europe, the National Union of Tunisian Journalists and the office of Article 19 in Tunisia organised in Tunis a workshop on media coverage of terrorism for 25 Tunisian journalists from public and private media. In a national context characterized by the ever-present threat of a terrorist attack, the aim of the workshop was both to raise participants’ awareness of their special rights and responsibilities in times of crisis and enhance their know-how in order to provide accurate and pluralistic information on the terrorist issue. In the light of feedbacks from experts and national and international professionals, participants discussed the importance of the terminology to be used, issues related to the safety of journalists and the respect of victims’ human dignity, the process of using and checking their sources of information, as well as the role of self-regulation and regulation in this field. The second day of the seminar was devoted to practical exercises (simulations, image analyses and reports), thereby enabling participants to analyze and come up with concrete answers to the challenges they face.
