Combating violence against women in Ukraine discussed at second Steering committee meeting of the project

On 1 July 2022 the Council of Europe organised a mid-term Steering committee meeting for the project “Combating Violence against Women in Ukraine” (COVAW).

The meeting gathered participants from the project’s main beneficiaries and partners, namely the Ukrainian Ministry of Social Policy, National Social Service, Government Commissioner on Gender Equality Policy and the Office of Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration. Other project stakeholders also joined the discussions, including relevant representatives of professional associations, and civil society organisations working in the area of combatting violence against women and domestic violence as well as the media.

The participants took stock of the implementation status of the project in light of the impact of Covid-19, the Russian aggression against Ukraine, and subsequent adjustments to the priorities of the project. The project’s results and achievements in 2021 along with redesigned project activities for 2022 were presented by the project team and project experts and agreed upon by Steering committee members.

The meeting also focused on the project’s contributions toward Istanbul Convention ratification, and the 20 June approval of the Istanbul Convention by the Verkhovna Rada. Kateryna Levchenko, Government Commissioner on Gender Equality Policy commended the contribution the project has made toward ratification of the Istanbul Convention and expressed hope that the Project will support the Government efforts on implementation of the convention in Ukraine.

Project achievements were further noted by Anna Sergeeva, Deputy Minister of Social Policy of Ukraine, who stressed the importance of continued cooperation between the Ministry and the Council of Europe in achieving zero tolerance to violence against women and expressed hope for future fruitful cooperation with the project. Olena Vykhor, the Head of the Department to counteract human trafficking, home violence and gender equity at the National Social Service of Ukraine praised project awareness raising activities implemented in partnership with the NSSU in 2021.

The COVAW project will run through December 2022.
