The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) released the its 3rd edition of the Gender Equality Index during a conference in Brussels today. The Index assesses progress achieved towards gender equality in the European Union (EU) and by its Member States over time (2005, 2010, 2012 and 2015). Based on EU policy priorities, the Index includes six core domains (work, money, knowledge, time, power and health) and gives insights into two others (violence against women and intersecting inequalities). The intersectional approach of the Index looks at factors beyond gender, such as age, disability, family type, country of birth and education. The EU’s overall score is 66.2 out of 100, demonstrating a very slow progress (only four points higher than ten years ago). At the national level, significant improvements are needed and setbacks can also be observed.
