On 9 April 2024, a significant step towards addressing violence against women and domestic violence was taken as the Specialised Commission on the implementation of the Istanbul Convention convened under the National Council for human rights. Bringing together 57 experts, representatives from specialised ministries and agencies, and civil society, this event aimed to enhance the effective implementation of the Istanbul Convention and prioritise actions to combat gender-based violence.
The meeting served as a crucial platform to consolidate collective efforts in preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. Key discussions revolved around the Roadmap for implementing GREVIO recommendations, alongside an analysis of the national legal framework's compatibility with the provisions of the Istanbul Convention. Implementation of the roadmap is expected to strengthen significantly the protection of victims and to prevent gender-based violence in the Republic of Moldova.
Felicia Bechtoldt, State Secretary for the Ministry of labour and social protection, provided insights into the Ministry's initiatives, particularly the finalisation of the Framework regulation on the organisation and functioning of the Social service for the rehabilitation of victims of domestic violence as well as the minimum quality standards. These initiatives aim to enhance services for victims of domestic violence and significantly increase the safety and protection within specialised services.
The Council of Europe reaffirms its commitment to provide technical support to the Republic of Moldova in its efforts to prevent and combat violence against women and domestic violence.
