Back Ukraine strengthens efforts to end violence against women: Council of Europe project marks midterm progress

On 9 April 2024 the Council of Europe project “Combatting violence against women in Ukraine - Phase II” (COVAW II) held a meeting of partners and stakeholders to highlight project achievements in 2023 and present planned steps for 2024. Key institutions, representatives of professional associations, experts and civil society organisations working in the area of combating violence against women and domestic violence in Ukraine attended the meeting, which marked the mid-point of the project.

The Steering Committee meeting was opened with welcome speeches highlighting progress in national legislation, the potential for intersectoral co-operation and mutual co-operation opportunities in this field.

The meeting also featured the presentation of a number of thematic publications, in particular: “Combating violence against women and domestic violence: a Practical guide for police officers” (2023 edition), “Working with victims of sexual violence during armed conflict: a Manual for Ukrainian prosecutors” and “After ratification: Promising practice to advance implementation of the Istanbul Convention”. One of the key project milestones in 2023 was research conducted in Ukrainian regions and territorial communities on public misunderstandings and myths about the Istanbul Convention, which will contribute to future awareness raising and training activities.

The final Project Steering Committee meeting is planned for November 2024.
