Back Guidance Tool for Business: "Doing Business with Respect for Human Rights"

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs commissioned and funded a guidance document for businesses, developed by Shift, Oxfam and the Netherlands Global Compact Network and published in 2016.

The guidance document "Doing Business with Respect for Human Rights" was developed over a multi-year collaboration between companies, civil society and issue experts and is designed to provide a foundational guide for businesses on how to implement respect for human rights in line with the UN Guiding Principles.

The document is addressed directly to those individuals working in companies and businesses who want to understand what “doing business with respect for human rights” means and to understand the key expectations of the UN Guiding Principles on Business.

It offers practical guidance and advice, experiences and insights on how staff can begin or build on existing efforts by their company to respect human rights throughout its operations. It features step-by-step guidance points, pitfalls to avoid, and parameters on what constitutes a credible approach to preventing and addressing human rights impacts.

The guidance is applicable to companies of all sizes, sectors and geographies, and can be used by staff in all departments and levels of a company.

The guide has an accompanying website which features interactive case stories.
