With the urgent global challenges posed by environmental degradation and the triple planetary crisis of climate change, pollution, and nature and biodiversity loss, the question of the need for an autonomous right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment has never been more timely.

On 3 May 2023, the Icelandic Presidency of the Committee of Ministers, with the support of the Council of Europe Secretariat, organised a high-level conference on "The right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment in practice."

The conference was opened by the Prime Minister of Iceland Katrín Jakobsdóttir and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić, followed by a keynote speech from former President of the European Court of Human Rights, Robert Spano.

Distinguished speakers from around the globe, including presidents of national apex courts, engaged in comprehensive discussions, reflecting on the necessity of an autonomous right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment and exploring the practical implementation of this right in a national context from both European and global perspectives in this one-day conference.
