Judge Nina Betetto, President of the CCJE, has issued a Statement on the role of judges during and in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic: lessons and challenges. The Statement points to the unprecedented challenges which judges face as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and highlights judges’ role in responding effectively to a sanitary crisis and its aftermath in full respect for human rights – and first of all for the European Convention on Human Rights - and the principles of democracy and the rule of law.

The President of the CCJE attended, on 17 June 2020, a video-conference organised by the Greek Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, with the participation of the Secretary General, on how to protect core values and standards of the Council of Europe in the context of the pandemic, and presented, on behalf of the CCJE, a vision for the role of judges across Europe in this process.
