An online conference for Cypriot judges on the “Change of Civil Procedure Rules: Experience of National and International Courts” was organized on 10 March 2021 by the Council of Europe together with the Supreme Court of Cyprus for presenting the Proposed New Rules of Civil Procedure and exchanging national and international experience in similar procedural changes.

The revision of the Rules of Civil Procedure is an important step in the ongoing Reform in the justice sector. This work is carried out in the framework of a joint project of the European Union and the Council of Europe in cooperation with the Supreme Court.

Participants had an opportunity to follow a presentation by the Supreme Court Judge and president of the permanent Rules Committee, Justice Yiasemis N. Yiasemi, who presented the main idea and the most important changes to be introduced by the new Rules. The president of the Judges’ Association, Justice Alexandros Panayiotou informed the participants on the procedures originating from the proposed Rules. Director of Reform and Training, Mr. George Erotocritou provided an insight of the next steps after the adoption of the new Rules by the Supreme Court.

Information on challenges, questions and possible solutions linked to the introduction of new procedural rules in other international and national judicial institutions was shared with the participants by the following speakers: the Right Honourable Lord Briggs of Westbourne of the Supreme Court of the UK, the Honourable Justice Seamus Noonan of Court of Appeal of Ireland, Vice-Registrar of the Court of Justice of the EU Mr Marc-Andre Gaudissart, and Head of Department at the Registry of the European Court on Human Rights Mr Klaudiusz Ryngielewicz.
