Back Delegation of Turkish judiciary attends a study visit to the Council of Europe in relation with the protection of freedom of expression

On 1-3 June, a delegation judges and prosecutors from Turkey attended a three-day study visit to the Council of Europe, within the framework of the European Union/Council of Europe Joint Project “Strengthening the Capacity of Turkish Judiciary on freedom of expression.” The delegation consisted of 12 representatives of various judicial bodies, including the key beneficiary, the Justice Academy of Turkey, and other project partners, such as the Constitutional Court, the Court of Cassation, the Council of State, the High Council of Judges and Prosecutors and the Ministry of Justice. Most participants have actively contributed to a new curriculum on freedom of expression to be applied by the Justice Academy of Turkey and are expected to become trainers on the matter. The purpose of the visit was to further enhance their understanding of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) standards on Article 10 within the context of the recent judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) against Turkey.
