First Workshop on Standard Operating Procedures in Cypriot courts

On 17-18 October 2023 the first Workshop on the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) mapping the procedures in Cypriot courts was successfully conducted. The workshop hosted at the Supreme Court of Cyprus and facilitated by a team of international experts was organised in the framework of the TJENI Project. The Project’s objective is to foster transparency of judicial decisions and improve consistency of national jurisprudence. The Project addresses functioning of the judiciaries and strengthen the quality of their judicial decision-making through integration of specialised tools and solutions.

The new Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) were adopted by the Supreme Court of Cyprus in May 2021 and entered into force in September 2023. Their successful implementation requires streamlining of the courts’ working methods and consistency in approaches and practices in civil cases processing within the different registries across Cyprus allowing uniform and consistent approach by all registries in the different districts.

The two-day training delivered to 40 Cypriot Registrars was focused on the SOPs developed by the international experts and touched upon the methodologies, modalities and steps of their development. Registrars are expected to lead the development of SOPs in the future and deliver training to their peers.

The project “Foster Transparency of Judicial Decisions and Enhancing the National Implementation of the ECHR” (TJENI) is implemented by the Council of Europe and funded by the EEA and Norway Grants Fund for Regional Cooperation.
