Study visit of the Serbian judiciary to Rome focused on the improvement of judicial training

The joint EU/CoE Project “Support for the Implementation of Judicial Reform” organised a study visit to Rome on 24 and 25 September 2024 for representatives of Serbian judicial institutions to exchange knowledge with their Italian colleagues on improving judicial training in Serbia. The Serbian delegation consisted of representatives from the Ministry of Justice, the High Prosecutorial Council, the High Judicial Council, and the Judicial Academy, and was led at a high level by the President of the Supreme Court, Ms Jasmina Vasović, and the Minister of Justice, Ms Maja Popović.

Members of the Serbian judiciary held informative and successful meetings with colleagues from all Italian institutions involved in the design and implementation of judicial training. The Serbian judiciary had meetings at the Supreme Court of Cassation, the Superior Council of the Judiciary, the Ministry of Justice, as well as with the Superior School for the Judiciary. Additionally, the Minister of Justice, Ms Maja Popović, had a bilateral meeting with the Italian Minister of Justice, Mr Nodrio, while the President of the Supreme Court, Ms Jasmina Vasović, met with the President of the Supreme Court of Cassation, Ms Cassano.

Given the current development of the new Law on the Judicial Academy of Serbia, this study visit provided the Serbian judiciary with a timely opportunity to learn about the Italian experience and potentially utilise some of Italy's best practices. Further improvement of judicial training remains one of the priorities of judicial reform in Serbia, and the joint EU/CoE Project “Support for the Implementation of Judicial Reform” will continue to actively support the Serbian judiciary in achieving this goal.
