Training of Judges on Ethics and Integrity in Cooperation with the Judicial Academy

With the support of the joint EU/CoE project "Support for the Implementation of Judicial Reform in Serbia", a training session for the first group of newly elected judges was organised in cooperation with the Judicial Academy in Belgrade. The training was arranged at the request of the High Judicial Council, aiming to ensure that all judges undertake training in this crucial area.

The judges were introduced to the key principles outlined in the new constitutional and legal framework in Serbia, as well as the current Ethics Code. Furthermore, relevant European standards were highlighted, including associated CCJE Opinions, GRECO recommendations, and Opinions from the Venice Commission relevant to judicial reform in Serbia. The training sessions featured active discussions, addressing a number of ethical principles and dilemmas, such as assertive communication and various ethical challenges encountered in practice. The discussions focused on key issues such as judges' freedom of expression, freedom of association, relationships with attorneys, and conduct on social networks. Participants shared their experiences and diverse viewpoints, emphasising the importance of peer dialogue on ethical matters.

Throughout 2025, the joint EU/CoE project "Support for the Implementation of Judicial Reform in Serbia" will support the training of approximately 200 newly elected judges. The knowledge and understanding of European standards on judicial ethics are key objectives of the project, contributing to raising awareness of the independence of judges and their role in safeguarding the rule of law in Serbia.
