A special screening of the documentary “Hacking Hate” directed by Simon Klose, hosted by the Anti-discrimination Department of the Council of Europe was held on 9 December at the VOX Cinema in Strasbourg. The event drew a diverse audience keen to explore the complex issue of online hate and extremism and the innovative strategies being employed to combat it.
Hallvard Goserth, Head of the Anti-Discrimination Department, opened the screening with remarks emphasizing the critical need to raise public awareness regarding the dangers of online hate speech. He further underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in mitigating its detrimental effects on society.
The film provided a compelling examination of the escalating problem of online hate and extremism, delving into its complexities and offering insights into strategies to counter it. Attendees were deeply engaged by the documentary’s narrative and its exploration of the darker aspects of the internet.
The screening was organised in the framework of the final project meeting of the joint EU- Council of Europe joint project “Increasing civil society organisations’ knowledge and capacity to counter hate speech online”. A second screening was held on 11 December at the Council of Europe’s headquarters.
