Purpose: Advisory bodies in Auckland to represent cultural minorities and deal with diversity matters.
Stimulus/Rationale:
The Independent Māori Statutory Board (IMSB) is mandated through legislation to ensure Auckland Council takes the views of Māori in Auckland into account when making decisions. The IMSB monitors Auckland Council activities, providing advice and assisting with the development of strategies and plans. It works towards six outcomes:
- Developing vibrant communities
- Enhancing leadership and participation
- Improving quality of life
- Promoting distinctive identity
- Ensuring sustainable futures
Process:
Several advisory panels provide particular advice to the Auckland Council on the needs and views of their communities. These include, for example, the Ethnic Peoples Advisory Panel, the Pacific Peoples' Advisory Panel or the Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel representing Auckland’s GLBTI community.
Multicultural New Zealand - New Zealand Federation of Multicultural Councils is a national umbrella organisation for all ethnic communities in New Zealand, advocating and dealing with migrant and refugee issues. It consists of multiple Multicultural New Zealand Councils, including the Auckland Regional Ethnic Council, the Auckland City Multiethnic Council and the North Shore Multicultural Council in Auckland.
