Alternative narratives and inclusive communication
Welcome to the online training!
All cities have a history; a sequence of concrete facts that are known, and which have brought us to where we are today. However, how we tell the story of our city - the narratives we choose - will impact how that story is perceived and understood. The Intercultural City understands communication can be enriched with multiple perspectives, filled with many voices and by valuing the diversity of the city.
For intercultural integration to occur, city authorities shall adopt a clear and well-publicised message emphasising their commitment to intercultural principles, on all occasions, in all communication. Every story is intercultural in a diverse city and can contribute to achieving a climate of public opinion more conducive to positive intercultural relations.
This course aims to address how city authorities can made the communication more inclusive and to introduce the concept of alternative narratives.
Why take this course?
This course on inclusive communication and alternative narratives is a starting point to build capacity for positive intercultural messaging and for the development of a public discourse to counter rumours, stereotypes and ultimately the spread of hate speech. We invite you to familiarise yourselves with the materials, ask questions and to share it with your colleagues. The first step to allowing new narratives to come to life, is to align your city staff behind them.
