Clarifications to Article 23 of the Convention - Solicitation of children for sexual purposes

The Council of Europe within the framework of its project "Combating violence against children in Ukraine" has provided clarifications to the articles of the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse (Lanzarote Convention) ratified by Ukraine in 2012.

The Convention was opened for signature by the Council of Europe in October 2007 on the island of Lanzarote and is therefore called the "Lanzarote Convention".

The Lanzarote Convention is an international legal instrument for the protection of children from sexual exploitation and abuse. States parties to the Convention must adopt legislation to criminalize sexual violence against a child in the family or the "circle of trust", as well as acts committed for commercial purposes and profit, and also take measures to protect child victims and bring perpetrators to justice.

Clarifications to the Articles of the Convention are very relevant in the context of the provisions of the draft Law of Ukraine "On amendments to certain legislative acts of Ukraine concerning the implementation of the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse (Lanzarote Convention)" (finalised) (registration no. 3055 of 11.02.2020, as amended on 20.02.2020).

Clarifications to Article 23 of the Convention - Solicitation of children for sexual purposes are available here.
