Council of Europe presents a New e-learning course on “The specifics of the work of a social psychologist with children who have psychological difficulties related to the war”

On 4 July 2024 the Council of Europe Project “Protecting the Rights of Ukrainian Children during and in post-war context” presented the online-learning course “The specifics of the work of social psychologist with children who have psychological difficulties related to the war”. The e-learning module has been developed by Council of Europe experts on the HELP platform based on the educational and methodical manual for psychologists Psychological support and assistance to children who have experienced traumatic events”.

The event was attended by over 20 representatives of ministries and departments, civil society organisations, higher educational institutions of Ukraine involved in the training of professionals providing psychosocial assistance to children who have experienced traumatic events.

In the opening of the event, Maciej Janczak, the Head of the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine, emphasised: «In reference to the specific event today, I would like to emphasize that having to experience traumatic events and losses as part of war or other prolonged conflict can cause serious psychological suffering to children and families. The impact of war can be tremendous, the affected population bearing long-lasting distress and psychological complications even after any acute danger and crisis has ended. To further support the capacity building of professional providing psychological help and support to children, the Project proceeded with the adaptation of educational and methodological materials for psychologists into the e-learning format.

Volodymyr Cherniei, Rector of National Academy of Internal Affairs, emphasised: «Having became a member of the Council of Europe, Ukraine has assumed the obligation to implement international standards for the child protection, including victims of violence and abuse. A special role here is given to the police, and is determined as one of the priorities for the development of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. The Academy also makes a significant contribution to the training of professionals in the field of psychological support to children who are at the epicenter of military aggression. We are sincerely grateful to the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine, which makes efforts to share international experience and provides practical and methodological assistance that is important for us».

The main goal of the course is to improve the competence of social psychologists in their professional interaction with children who have psychological difficulties related to the war in accordance with the scientific methods and practice. This course will help psychologists professionally comprehend the specifics of working with children who have psychological difficulties related to the war.

The course is intended primarily for social psychologists, but it can also be recommended to other professionals who are involved in working with children who have psychological difficulties related to the war. In particular, this course can be useful for scientific and pedagogical staff of higher education institutions, professionals of the psychological service of the education system (practicing psychologists and social pedagogues), representatives of civil society organisations, students and other related specialists who provide psychosocial support to children and their families, as well as improve their own professional skills.
