The President of the Parliamentary Assembly Theodoros Rousopoulos and the First Vice-Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Oleksandr Korniyenko met today in the framework of the 3rd meeting of the High-level Dialogue on “Good democratic governance in Ukraine: achievements, challenges and the way forward in the post-war period” taking place on 2-3 July in Strasbourg, which will mainly focus on further decentralisation in Ukraine and on the preparation of conditions for holding post-war elections.

The ongoing co-operation established between the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Council of Europe was positively assessed, including the notable results achieved in the framework of the projects “Strengthening relations and co-operation between the Ukrainian Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly” and “Supporting democratic post-war elections in Ukraine”.

The unwavering support of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for Ukraine was underlined as the Assembly has just adopted a Resolution and a Recommendation calling on member States of the Council of Europe to continue providing political and logistical support in consolidating, together with Ukraine, a comprehensive system of accountability, and in particular, setting up a special tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine and an international claims commission and a compensation fund.

The President of the Assembly stressed the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring that the Verkhovna Rada fully exercises its constitutional powers and parliamentary scrutiny to preserve and ensure the good functioning of democratic institutions, the rule of law, and the protection of human rights.
