Revised version of Compass: Manual for Human Rights Education with Young People is available in Ukrainian

The Council  of Europe and the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine cooperate for further development of the youth policy and youth work in Ukraine. The translation of documents introducing the Council of Europe standards, manuals, and materials is an important component of cooperation promoting the dissemination and use of the Council of Europe approaches and practices in Ukraine.

Editing and publishing the 2020 updated edition of COMPASS - a manual on human rights education with young people was carried out within the framework of the Council of Europe Project “Youth for Democracy in Ukraine” in Ukrainian.

It is not enough for children and young people simply to hold human rights. In order to embed a human rights culture and ensure that our young people understand how to access those rights – and to uphold, defend and promote them – they need an education fit for that purpose”, – Marija Pejčinović Burić, the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, said in the preface to the updated edition of Compass manual.

The Compass manual was first published in 2002 within the framework of the Human Rights Education Youth Programme of the Directorate of Youth and Sport of the Council of Europe. The programme was created because human rights education meaning educational programmes and activities that focus on promoting equality in human dignity – was, and remains, of incalculable value in shaping a dimension of democratic citizenship for all young people and in promoting a culture of universal human rights.

For nearly 20 years, the Compass manual has become a reference manual for many people involved in value-based youth work and non-formal education, particularly in Ukraine. It is currently available in more than 30 languages, ranging from Arabic and Japanese to Icelandic and Basque. It is essential that Compass and its publication in various language versions have been the medium through which human rights education has been brought onto the agenda of youth work and into the curricula of many schools.

The Compass manual on human rights education with young people contains the foundations on which the principles of youth work are based. We recommend consulting it both for those who are just starting their careers in working with young people and already experienced youth workers seeking to periodically evaluate their work”, - Olena Marchuk, communication manager of the All-Ukrainian Youth Centre, emphasizes in the feedback on the use of the Compass manual.

The Compass manual contains both theoretical sections on human rights education, approaches of the manual to human rights education, understanding the human rights, and 58 practical activities and methods that can be used in human rights education.

This is a reference manual for everyone who works with youth. It may help speak in a qualitative and, most importantly, interesting manner with young people about human rights. Not for a show, but for a real understanding and use of the acquired knowledge”, - Pavlo Medyna notes in the feedback on the use of the Compass manual.

The Project “Youth for Democracy in Ukraine” is implemented within the framework of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine 2018-2022 and is based on previous experience and efficient bilateral cooperation between the Council of Europe and the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine under the Framework Programme on Cooperation between the Council of Europe and the Ministry of Youth and Sport of Ukraine in the Field of Youth Policy for 2016-2020.
