To mark the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the Bureau of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities adopted a declaration which will also be presented to the forthcoming Congress session in March for adoption.
In its declaration the Bureau joins the international community’s call for Russia to end its war against Ukraine and withdraw its troops from the territory of Ukraine immediately, fully and unconditionally and it most emphatically condemns the horrific war crimes as well as acts of possible genocide that have been committed by Russian forces.
The Bureau highlights the critical importance of seeking justice for victims and holding Russia accountable for its brutal war of aggression against Ukraine and reiterates its support for Ukraine in its accession process to the European Union.
The President of the Congress, Leen Verbeek, quoting the declaration, stated that the Bureau “stands by the Ukrainian people at this historically decisive time for Ukraine and the world and believes in a common, democratic future based on respect for international law and a just peace.”
