On August 21-23, 2024, in partnership with the CEELI Institute, the Council of Europe co-organised a workshop for Ukrainian judges and lawyers on the European Convention on Human Rights. The workshop was held in Prague, Czech Republic. The activity focused on the right to a fair trial and its interpretation in the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights. Important part of the activity programme concerned the matters of application of human rights during the armed conflict, considering the current context of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

The participants of the workshop benefited from the knowledge-sharing and rich experience of highly-professional faculty, composed of the Council of Europe experts, namely J.McBride, Barrister, UK; N.Marchuk, judge, Supreme Court, Ukraine; D.Tretyakov, Senior Lawyer, Registry of the European Court of Human Rights; S.Zayets, defence attorney, Ukraine.

The present workshop provided for a final part and concluded a cycle of training activities within a long-term human rights programme organised for Ukrainian legal professionals by the CEELI Institute in partnership with the Ukrainian Helsinki Union and Ukrainian NGO “Regional Press Development Institute”.

The activity was organised within the Council of Europe project “Fostering Human Rights in the Criminal Justice System in Ukraine”, implemented within the frame of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine “Resilience, Recovery and Reconstruction” 2023-2026.
