The second Working Group meeting on Improving National Legislation on the Protection of the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons (further – the WG) was co-organised by the Council of Europe Project “Strengthening the Human Rights Protection of Internally Displaced Persons in Ukraine” together with the Ministry on Temporarily Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons of Ukraine on the 20th of December 2016.
The Working Group meeting was aimed at presenting the latest developments and achievements on improvement of the national legislation on the protection of the human rights of internally displaced persons in Ukraine by its five thematic sub-groups that cover such topics, as:
- Improving the legal status of IDPs and the mandate of state authorities and local self-government regarding IDPs;
- Confirmation of civil status and agreements, recognition of legal facts;
- Protection of social and economic rights of IDPs;
- Providing legal grounds for improving access to education;
- Housing, restitution, compensation for property loss.
It was agreed that Working Group will continue to meet at regular basis in order to assess the progress made and problems that still need to be addressed; consequently the Council of Europe Project will continue its technical assistance and expert support to the work of the Ministry on Temporarily Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons of Ukraine Working Group.
