The activities proposed in this Pestalozzi training unit discourage lecture-based teaching and increase focus on the relationship between everyday cultural practices and the politics of schooling. The training unit tries to show how these interventions can help to scaffold canonical knowledge, increase student engagement and raise critical consciousness. Transversal attitudes, skills and knowledge (TASKs), addressed by the activities, include: acceptance of diversity as a positive value with regards to the environment and the survival of humankind, willingness to act and encourage others to act against discrimination prejudices, stereotypes and injustices, and skills that underlie democratic behavior.
The training unit focuses on movement and dance. It is primarily meant for dance teachers and teacher trainers in other subject areas who would like to use more movement based activities in their sessions. Beginners in this field will find a lot of useful theoretical and practical support in the “Background and context” section as well as under “Tips for trainers” at the end of each activity.
