This Pestalozzi training session plan describes a sequence of learning activities for teachers to help them explore the problems related to teaching difficult issues and to make judgements about the effectiveness of different approaches to teaching topics like the Holocaust. A number of the activities could be used directly with pupils, but the main focus is on teachers to help them think about if and how they would teach such activities in the classroom.
The cooperative activities in this training unit help participants to recognise what makes an issue controversial, what problems teachers or pupils may encounter when studying difficult issues and how to make judgements about a range of teaching approaches, practical activities and their effectiveness.
