This resource moves between the teaching inside the classroom and its relationship with the community, in order to foster the development of competences for democracy. It focuses on a sense of community, on intercultural dialogue while raising awareness on the value of sustainable development.
The training unit helps participants to understand concepts of democratic culture, competences for democracy and sustainable development as well as how to implement these concepts into the school practice. It supports participants in developing cooperation skills by engaging social actors from non-school surrounding in the training, such as NGOs for example.
The unit employs case studies, individual and small group work activities, fishbowl and round robin methods as well as evaluation questionnaires to reflect on the learners progression within the topic. It also features activities using the Competences for Democratic Culture that can be used in the classroom.
The resource can be used with learners from a variety of age groups. It helps students to work in teams, to employ materials for democratic education and can be used with classroom groups, study groups and as a training exercise.
