This Pestalozzi training unit provides teacher trainers with a guide and resources for presenting, analysing and understanding the American point of view of events going on in Europe before, during and after WWI. The USA, the only non-European power to participate in military operations in Europe, had an important role in the aftermath of the war and peacemaking processes. Comparing the USA approach to that of European Allied Powers to after war peacemaking allows teachers and pupils to study the controversial aspects of the Versailles treaties of 1919 and thus helps to develop appropriate critical thinking skills for understanding and interpreting historical events. Through the example of the Versailles treaties this training session plan also aims to show how a teacher can teach controversial issues by using multiperspectivity, distancing techniques and role play.
